Belgium’s former prime minister and ex-European Council chief Charles Michel has thrown his hat into the papal ring.
Charles Michel has been linked with the now-vacant position of pontiff. Michel, who until recently led the European Council, told reporters that he is “keeping his options open” after Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.
It is not the first time that Michel has been listed as a potential candidate for a job he is largely unqualified for. Rumours about a run at the NATO and United Nations top gigs all proved unfounded.
Perhaps these latest murmurings could have some substance to them though, as Michel’s desperation to finally find work is getting rather obvious. He was also overheard telling confidants that "it is time for Belgium to have its first pope".
However, Michel’s inner circle revealed that the former PM is a little apprehensive about pursuing a career in the church, as he is concerned about the mortality rate in the Vatican.
“Former president Michel is worried that there is some sort of curse on the papal position, as each of the popes normally die in office. We’re looking into this for him,” said a top aide under condition of anonymity.
Angela Merkel, Germany's former chancellor, has also been whispered as perhaps in the running to be the Catholic church's first female leader.
