A protest against "British TERF fascism" will take place outside the UK Embassy in Brussels at 18:00 on Tuesday.
Antifascist organisation AFA-BXL is calling on all transgender allies to join the protest at Avenue d’Auderghem, Etterbeek against British trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) fascism on Tuesday.
The action follows the UK Supreme Court's ruling that the definition of a woman is based on "biological" sex, therefore excluding transgender women.
"What this will mean in concrete terms for the lives of trans women in the UK is unclear, but will likely see a violent erosion of their rights," the antifascist organisation AFA-BXL stated.
"Particularly vulnerable now are their legal protections against discrimination on the basis of gender, and access to gender specific services and spaces (think emergency shelters, hospital wards, changing rooms, rape crisis support and more,"
Far-reaching consequences
The Supreme Court ruling sets a "dangerous precedent" for the rest of the world, AFA-BXL warns. The TERF movement claims to act in service of women but is supported by a range of reactionary actors such as evangelical and far-rights groups in the US.
"TERF movements do fascism's dirty work: attempting to give the repression and exclusion of minority groups a friendly face, by strategically repackaging conservative and far-right politics in the language of liberalism."
The movement has ties to groups that are attempting to oppose other phenomena like queer relationships, sex education and access to abortion.
