Granvelle Rest Home in Ganshoren, a Brussels municipality, closed its doors on Friday after being declared bankrupt, with around 40 residents needing urgent relocation, Iriscare confirmed on Tuesday following a report by La Capitale.

The bankruptcy was attributed to a lack of subsidies since last October and the building’s failure to meet safety standards.

Examples include the lift being unsuitable for stretcher evacuations, corridors too narrow for residents with reduced mobility, and the common room not meeting minimum size requirements, according to La Capitale.

Despite not complying with regulations since 2020, Granvelle Residence continued operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The sudden bankruptcy left affected residents without the 90-day window to find new accommodation as SRL Gentilly filed its accounts last Friday morning.

However, Ganshoren municipality, Iriscare and the relevant Public Centres for Social Welfare (CPAS) had already prepared for an emergency.

Last Friday, services relocated all residents to several other rest homes, including eight to Home Heydeken in Ganshoren. Others were placed in rest homes across Brussels City, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Anderlecht.
