The Belgian Air Component has temporarily suspended the aerobatic team’s participation in air shows, announced Defence on Wednesday, citing the transition to new training aircraft as the reason.
The national demonstration team has been flying the Siai Marchetti SF260 aircraft since its reformation in 2011.
Originally established in 1957, the Red Devils (like the national football team) are known for their aerial stunts with Hawker Hunters. They ceased activities in 1977 before being revived 14 years ago for the 65th anniversary of the Belgian Air Force.
The over 50-year-old Siai Marchetti SF260 aircraft will be replaced by new training planes. "This transition period allows us to focus on training our student pilots, ensuring optimal preparation for the future," the Ministry of Defence said.
The Red Devils made their final appearance at the International Sanicole Airshow in Hechtel-Eksel, Limburg, in September 2024.
The public can explore the Air and Space Component of Defence during the Beauvechain Air Base Day on Wednesday, 7 May; the Coxyde open day on Wednesday, 2 July; and the Sanicole Airshow on 13 and 14 September.
