Jens-Frederik Nielsen, newly appointed Prime Minister of Greenland, will visit Denmark on 27 and 28 April, the Danish government announced on Wednesday.

This marks Nielsen’s first visit since he became the leader of Greenland’s coalition government following the election victory of his centre-right Demokraatit party on 11 March 2025.

“We are living in a time that calls for unity,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement. “We must support each other in the challenging foreign policy situation currently facing Greenland and Denmark.”

During his visit, Nielsen will also have an audience with Danish King Frederik X. Afterwards, the king is expected to visit Greenland.

Greenland has recently garnered international attention after US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring the largely autonomous island.

Greenland was a Danish colony for a long time until it became an integral part of Denmark in 1953 and gained autonomy in 1979. This status was expanded in 2009.
