Jonnie Boer, the renowned Dutch chef from the Michelin-starred restaurant De Librije in Zwolle, has died at the age of 60.

A spokesperson for the restaurant confirmed his passing on Wednesday evening, stating that Boer died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism on Wednesday morning in the Caribbean island of Bonaire. De Librije was already closed for a holiday from 20 to 29 April.

The spokesperson expressed deep sorrow. “Everyone is extremely sad and devastated. It’s incomprehensible,” he said. “It’s so sudden and abrupt. There is a sense of shock among the staff and family, of course.”

The future of De Librije remains uncertain. “We are considering our next steps,” the spokesperson added, noting that there was little information available at this stage.

Under Boer’s leadership, De Librije has held three Michelin stars since 2004.

It is currently the only restaurant in the Netherlands with three of the prestigious awards.
