Kinepolis Group experienced a slow start to the year with a weak film slate, the cinema chain reports in its financial update.
Despite this, a strong beginning to the second quarter has quickly made up for the initial lag in visitor numbers. The cinema's executive is now more optimistic about the promising film line-up scheduled for the rest of the year.
The group welcomed 6.45 million visitors globally, including 1.21 million in Belgium, a decrease of 11.6% worldwide attributed to a lacklustre March with almost no blockbuster releases compared to last year’s success with films like ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’.
Kinepolis operates cinemas in Belgium, France, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, the United States, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.
Despite a dip in visitors resulting in reduced total revenue and net profit compared to 2024, the company is optimistic for 2025.
Last year, a strong film line-up did not arrive until the end of June, while this year, a robust schedule begins in April with the launch of ‘Minecraft: The Movie’, indicating a resurgence of Hollywood.
CEO Eddy Duquenne states that, beyond film-related fluctuations, costs are managed well and revenue per visitor is steadily increasing.
