Around one-fifth of Brussels residents would like to move outside the Capital Region – twice as many as in Flanders and Wallonia, according to the latest barometer published by real estate website Immoweb.

The search for peace and quiet topped the list of reasons for leaving Brussels (28%), followed by the need for greenery (26%), proximity to work (26%), more affordable accommodation (18%), more spacious accommodation (15%) and closer proximity to family (15%).

While Brussels residents seemingly have a greater desire to move elsewhere, the people of Flanders are the most nomadic: a quarter of Flemish respondents have already changed province. In Brussels, the proportion is 19%, compared with just 14% of Walloons.

The study was carried out by YouGov for Immoweb between 7 and 10 March 2025, among a representative sample of the Belgian adult population of 1,002 people.
