The World Road Running Championships will not take place this year, World Athletics announced on Friday in a press release.
The international athletics federation had revealed in early March that it was in discussions with potential candidates to replace San Diego, California, which had withdrawn as host city.
However, despite promising talks with several alternative locations, World Athletics has now decided against relocating this year’s championships.
The federation explained that, while some alternatives offered excellent prospects, there wasnot enough time for careful planning and preparation to successfully organise an event of this calibre, which involves both elite and mass participation.
The next World Road Running Championships will be held on 19-20 September 2026 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Just two weeks ago, the first edition of the European Road Running Championships was hosted by Leuven and Brussels.
