The face mask obligation for children as young as 6 years old should be lifted as soon as possible, Flemish Youth Minister Benjamin Dalle said in the run-up to the Consultative Committee meeting on Friday.

The Consultative Committee could discuss switching to 'code orange' on the coronavirus barometer if the figures maintain their downwards trends, but the priority should be making it easier for children, Dalle told Het Nieuwsblad.

"Today, there are still some coronavirus measures in force that I have difficulties with. For example, we need to get rid of the compulsory face mask from the age of six as soon as possible," he said. "That is one of the first things the Consultative Committee should review."

Additionally, he said that he hopes code yellow – "or even better" – will be in force by summer. "In that case, it will be a carefree summer. The strict rules of the summer of 2020 will certainly not return. So, no more bubbles at camp. Pre-testing will not be necessary either."

The Consultative Committee will meet on Friday 11 February from 14:00 to evaluate the epidemiological situation and the coronavirus barometer. A more in-depth explanation of the different colour codes of the barometer and what they mean can be found here.
