Traffic through Brussels South Charleroi Airport bounced back in 2021 from the dramatic passenger drop-off a year ago but only enough to equal half the pre-Covid pandemic level.
All told, 3,758,289 passengers passed through the Charleroi airport in 2021, a 47% increase from 2020 when Covid-related travel restrictions caused global air travel to virtually stop. However, in 2019, more than 8.2 million passengers used Charleroi, demonstrating how far the airport has to go before it returns to pre-pandemic volumes, Belga News Agency reports.

So far, 2022 is off to a good start for the airport. Already, 330,187 passengers passed through Charleroi in January, a dramatic increase from the 82,341 passengers using the airport a year ago during the height of Covid-related travel restrictions. The airport added 23 new direct connections in 2021 and announced seven more will start in 2022.
