European Commission regulators have threatened to take hosts Belgium to the court for a trio of infringements of EU law.

Belgium was one of 15 countries issued with a final warning for its failure to strictly police so-called 'alien species' of plants and animals deemed disruptive to the environment.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo's coalition government "failed to establish, implement and communicate" remedies to EU concerns filed in June 2021 over biodiversity loss under agreed targets.

National officials have two months to prevent the EU executive from taking the matter to the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union, a statement underlined.
