On Monday, a large-scale operation to clean up the 'dirty tunnels' under the railway line in Saint-Josse, in the Northern Quarter, is now underway.
The clean-up operation was launched under the initiative of Saint-Josse Mayor Emir Kir, and started with the tunnel Prairie-Place du Nord. It will gradually be extended to the Gineste and Brabant-Passage Rogier tunnels.
"We want these dirty tunnels, which belong to Infrabel, to be safer. In the absence of a response from the operator, we are rolling up our sleeves and taking action at the municipal level for our residents," Kir said in a press release.

He called the tunnels "a stain on the urban landscape, but we must tackle them by providing greater safety for those who use them every day." By cleaning and painting them, and providing lights, Kir wants to contribute to the "positive dynamic that we want to see emerge in the North Quarter."
The work on all the bridges' spans will be carried out in phases, from the end of March to the beginning of December, and in addition to the cleaning and painting work, street lighting will also be placed.
