The Sportcity Olympic swimming pool in the Brussels municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre will be closed until the end of June because it is getting a new ventilation system to reduce energy costs and improve air quality.
The new ventilation system will enable significant energy savings of about 30%. The Olympic-size swimming pool is the largest consumer of energy among the municipality's public buildings.
"When we see the increase in energy costs today, we are glad that we have anticipated a little," Mayor Benoît Cerexhe told BX1.
The works will also make it possible to reduce the level of trichloramine in the air. "It was too high, and this would have created long-term problems in meeting the requirements of Brussels Environment without investment."

A budget of more than €2 million euros has been made available, which Cerexhe called "a very large investment," adding that it complements the investments already made in recent years, with the renovation of the changing rooms, lockers, lighting and the installation of the anti-drowning detection system.
During the three months of closure, schools that offer swimming lessons in the pool will be offered a way to organise other sports activities instead of pool lessons. For individual swimmers, season tickets and ten-bath tickets are renewed.
