The Brussels Tram Museum will be resuming the retro tram rides in Belgium's capital for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic halted the service.

On Easter Monday, as well as several other public holidays in the spring and summer, the belle époque trams will once again leave the depot for a ride through the city for the first time in more than two years, the museum recently announced.

Two 30-minute tram routes will run on these days, both departing from Place Poelaert (in front of Palais de Justice), one of which will take passengers from one end of Avenue Louise to Bois de la Cambre. The other route will go via Rue Royale to Eglise Royale Ste. Marie in Schaerbeek.

Both tram rides, for which a ticket to ride along costs €6, will bring passengers back to Place Poelaert. Children under the age of six can ride along for free.

Tickets aren't available online but are sold at Place Poelaert, where one of the old-timer buses will serve as a ticket booth.

After Easter Monday, the trams will once again take to the tracks on Labour Day (1 May), Ascension Day (26 May) and Assumption Day (15 August).

On 8 May, all rides will be free, and the only preserved Mack bus that ran between 1957 and 1973 will make a unique public appearance, while a special event will be organised on the 40th anniversary of the Tram Museum (22 May).

'Unforgettable experience'

The retro tram rides were introduced in 2019 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of trams in the capital region. "We attracted thousands of passengers then who were very enthusiastic," Antoine Ertveldt of the Tram Museum in Woluwe told Bruzz.

"In 2020 and 2021, the pandemic threw a spanner in the works, but this year we are returning to give Brussels residents and visitors an unforgettable experience."

Onboard the trams, a face mask is mandatory for passengers aged 12 and over. More information on the rides and the timetable of when trams will depart can be found here.
