Ecuador’s National Court of Justice will officially ask Belgium to extradite former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, said the Court’s president, Ivan Saquicela.
Correa was sentenced in absentia in 2020 to eight years in prison on corruption charges, Belga News Agency reports.
After his term expired in 2017, the former Ecuadorian head of State had moved to Belgium, where his wife is from.
Saquicela signed an extradition request on Thursday, he said in an interview with the Teleamazonas TV channel. The National Court of Justice will now send it on to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ecuador has an extradition treaty with Belgium.
