Belgian Royal Family conducts state visit to Greece

Belgian monarchs King Phillipe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, will conduct a royal visit to Greece as part of a three-day state visit to the country on 2 May, according to a Royal press release.

This is the first official state visit conducted since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The last Belgian state visit to Greece was in 2001.

The state visit will be accompanied by Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter and Minister-Presidents Elio Di Rupo, Pierre-Yves Jeholet, Rudi Vervoort, Jan Jambon, and Oliver Paasch, as well as a delegation of academic and business leaders.

The state will be conducted at the invitation of Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, who will take the delegation around Athens to meet with members of the Greek authorities.

The Royal Family is also set to take part in academic and economic conferences, as well as activities aimed at the integration of refugees and the fight against child poverty.

The two nations are expected to cooperate in several fields. Both countries are currently facing challenges related to the economy and immigration. It is hoped that the state visit will help facilitate greater cooperation in the field of business, as well as information sharing, the digital and energy transition, and sustainable growth.

Belgium and Greece have historic cultural links. There is a sizeable Greek community in both Brussels and Belgium. There are also thousands of Belgian expats in Greece. Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with around half a million Belgian visitors each year.
