The end of the Second World War was commemorated on Sunday in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier, located at the foot of the Congress Column in Brussels, Belga News Agency reports.
The ceremony was attended by National Defence Minister Ludivine Dedonder, the Speaker of the Chamber of Representatives, Eliane Tillieux, and a representative of the King of Belgium.
Numerous foreign ambassadors and political leaders were present at the event, which commemorated the day, 77 years ago, that the German army capitulated to the Allies.

The Royal Band of the Belgian Navy took part in the commemoration, while the Armed Forces were represented by the Prince Boudewijn-Grenadiers Regiment from Bourg-Léopold.
Two young soldiers spoke at the event; flowers were laid at the tomb of the unknown soldier and a minute of silence was observed.
