Belgian Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet has called on the EU to “implement a real bicycle policy” in a declaration signed on Thursday alongside his fellow ministers from Luxembourg, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and Ireland.

The goal? Making 2024 the European Year of Cycling which would "symbolise the importance of cycling as a unique and fully-fledged means of transport,” said the Ecolo minister.

This proclamation urged the EU to prioritise cycling in its climate strategy, dedicate resources to cycling policy, and promote its advantages.

"Cycling is one of the solutions to today's problems," Gilkinet noted. "With climate change, growing energy prices, and health problems caused by our sedentary lifestyles, the European Union must focus on cycling, just as it does on rail."
