Dutch carrier KLM said on Saturday that it has had to take exceptional measures to avert a rush on Schiphol Airport, including suspending arrivals from other European destinations, Belga News Agency reports.
Affected flights included those coming in from the Belgian capital, with Brussels Airport announcing on its Internet site that a Brussels -Amsterdam flight scheduled for 6:20 p.m. had been cancelled.
KLM had announced that it would scrap up to 50 flights per day over the extended Pentecost weekend due to the expected high number of travellers at Schiphol. It said it was taking the measure to contribute “to a manageable situation within the airline.”
The last few weeks have often been chaotic at Schiphol Airport. The airline sector conducted massive layoffs during the Coronavirus pandemic but with the demand for flights on the rebound, it has had a hard time finding staff.
On Saturday, queues stretched beyond the departure hall: the airport said the situation was fraught but manageable.
