Kazakh tennis star Elena Rybakina gained her first-ever Grand Slam on Saturday after beating Tunisian Ons Jabeur to win the Women's Singles Championship at Wimbledon 2022.
In the final, the 23-year-old Moscow-born Kazakh only just defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur (WTA-2), who, like Rybakina, was in the final of a Grand Slam for the first time.
After 1 hour and 48 minutes, it was 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2 on the scoreboard. The prestigious Wimbledon Championship win is only Rybakina’s third WTA title.
In 2019 she won in Hobart, in 2020 in Bucharest. In addition, she was runner-up six times (Nanchang 2019, Shenzhen, Saint Petersburg, Dubai and Strasbourg 2020, Adelaide 2022).
A quarterfinal at Roland-Garros last year was her previous best result at a Grand Slam. Despite her victory, Rybakina remains 23rd in the world ranking. As no Russians and Belarusians were admitted to the tournament, it was decided not to award ranking points.
