Ukrainian troops have already recaptured more than 40 villages around Kherson, the southern Ukrainian port city held by the Russians, according to the local governor.
Some villages were almost completely destroyed and are still under attack by the Russians, he said.
Moscow has not confirmed the loss of the villages.
The Ukrainian army has been conducting a counter-offensive in the south of Ukraine for weeks now. This region is of great economic and strategic importance, since it borders Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.
The Ukrainian army has bombed several important bridges over the Dnepr River that the Russians use to transport troops and equipment.
Shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February, Kherson became the first major city to be captured by Russian troops.
According to experts, the Russians are vulnerable to a counter-offensive by the Ukrainians, precisely because of their dependence on the bridges over the Dnepr.
Russian troops now rely on a pontoon bridge and small boats.
