The 'Interconnector' pipeline, which delivers natural gas from the United Kingdom to Europe via Zeebrugge, has been shut down owing to a failure with the filtering system.

A gas pipeline from Bacton in the United Kingdom to Zeebrugge in Belgium had to be shut down on Thursday.

Every year, 20 billion cubic metres of natural gas are brought to Belgium, while 25.5 billion cubic metres are transferred in the opposite way, via this pipeline.

However, a problem with the English filtration system caused rumours that the pipeline's capacity would be limited on Thursday, with around 205,350 MWh of gas planned to travel from Zeebrugge to Bacton.

A few hours later, the decision to shut the pipeline off completely was announced by the managing companies: Belgian corporation Fluxys who own 76.32% of the pipeline and Italian company SNAM who own 23.68%.
