There is still a shortage of five- and ten-cent coins in Belgium. “However, there have never been so many coins in circulation as today,” Francis Adyns, spokesman for the Finance Department, said on Monday.

Right now, there are about 763 million five-cent coins and 470 million ten-cent ones in circulation, “enough to meet the needs of the system of payments, which are increasingly being done digitally,” Adyns explains.

Nevertheless, the Finance Department is calling on Belgians to use coins they have saved up. In June, the National Bank had already issued the same message.

The Royal Mint of Belgium is looking for solutions to reduce the scarcity.
