Diesel and gasoline will be much cheaper in France from Thursday, when two significant rebates kick in across the border.

The French government is temporarily increasing the excise duty rebate to €0.30 per litre and the supplier, Total Energies, is granting another rebate of €0.20.

Belgian petrol pump owners are worried about potential competition.

“The price difference with Belgium is becoming so big that we fear for the competitive position of our service stations in the border region,” Johan Mattart of the Belgian federation of fuel traders, Brafco, said on Wednesday.

He called on the Belgian government to further reduce excise duties.

The federal government already applies a reduction of 17.5 cents on petrol and diesel at the pump. According to Mr. Mattart, European regulations allow a further reduction. That, he says, would reduce the difference with not only France, but also Germany.
