Figures recently released by the Flemish Energy and Climate Agency (VEKA) show that nearly one in three Flemish schools have solar panels on their roofs.

As more and more people are finding ways to save money due to the energy crisis, schools in Flanders have taken to installing solar panels in order to avoid paying exuberant energy bills by wintertime.

As a result, according to figures requested by Flemish MP Loes Vandromme (CD&V) and provided by VEKA, 32.8% of schools in Flanders now have solar panels.

In total, this equates to more than 228,000 square metres, or more than 45 football pitches.

However, 448 more schools filed project requests for energy-saving measures between July 2021 and April 2022, but only 156 of them have been approved.
