Rescuers from the Brussels fire brigade (DBDMH) were physically attacked and threatened with death on Saturday morning during an intervention in Schaerbeek. They had been called by a man, who attacked and threatened them on the spot, Bruzz reports. The service is going to file a complaint with civil parties.
The man in his thirties called the emergency services just before 11:00 on Saturday because he needed medical attention. “But when our teams arrived on the scene, they were confronted with an individual who did not want to cooperate at all,” said spokesperson Walter Derieuw.
“The paramedics then decided to request assistance from the Belgian Mobile Urgency Group (MUG). That team tried to give the man an injection, but he resisted. All of the MUG's equipment was thrown on the floor,” Derieuw said.
According to Derieuw, the man went wild, scratched an ambulance employee until he was bleeding, tore his t-shirt and stuck his finger in the eye of a colleague, who suffered a corneal injury and had to go to the hospital for treatment. The man also made death threats. The police eventually intervened to calm the attacker.
DBDMH and the injured ambulance driver will file a complaint with the Brussels public prosecutor's office.
