The situation around the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, is untenable, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a report published after a visit to the plant by a team of IAEA officials and experts.
The UN agency, like Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, is calling for the creation of a security zone to avoid a nuclear disaster at the plant, which is located in Ukrainian territory occupied by the Russian army.
Interim measures are urgently needed, the IAEA said in its 52-page report.
After weeks of deliberations, the IAEA team, led by Director General Rafael Grossi, was able to travel last week to the plant, which is operated by Ukrainians but occupied by Russian military. Two of the IAEA experts were still there on Tuesday.
