Romanian low-cost airline Blue Air has been forced to cancel all its flights to and from Romanian airports after its bank accounts were frozen by the Romanian government due to the airline's rapidly collapsing financial situation. As a result, some flights from Brussels’ Zaventem Airport have now been cancelled.
The accounts of the Romanian airlines were blocked after its failure to pay a fine to the Romanian government. The Romanian government insists that this is no reason for the airline to cancel flights, however the airline states that it is now no longer able to pay its suppliers.
Blue Air owes more than €5.8 million to the Romanian government for emissions certificates and was recently fined an additional €2 million for cancelling thousands of flights across Europe.
Flights from Zaventem Airport to Bucharest have now been cancelled. The Romanian government estimates that some 3,000 passengers have been affected by the suspension of flights across Europe.
Due to the poor financial situation of Blue Air, the Romanian government previously advised its citizens to avoid the airline, leading to a rapid deterioration of the airlines’ finances.
