France on Friday condemned the passing by North Korea of a law authorising the country to carry out preventive nuclear attacks, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

"France condemns in the strongest terms the adoption of the law amending North Korea's nuclear stance," a spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry said. "This new escalation by the North Korean authorities poses a threat to international and regional peace and security," she stressed.

She stressed that Paris "is taking note with deep concern of North Korea's increasingly aggressive statements."

North Korea's parliament has just passed a law that not only allows nuclear weapons to be deployed as a deterrent but also requires them to be deployed automatically in the event of an imminent attack on the country's leadership.
