De Croo, Lahbib, Van Quickenborne and Kitir to attend UN General Assembly

The 77th session of the UN General Assembly is set to open in New York on Monday 19 September, with the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.

Belgium will be represented by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib, Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne, and  Minister for Development Cooperation Meryame Kitir, the FPS Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.

De Croo will give Belgium's address from a platform at the General Assembly on Friday 23 September.

The Belgium delegation will be able to highlight priorities and themes important to Belgium at the UN. It will also have the opportunity to meet many counterparts and UN officials, in bilateral and multilateral form.

In addition to his meeting with UN  Secretary General Antonio Guterres, De Croo will participate in events aimed at strengthened the rights of young people and women.

He is set to speak at Belcham, the Belgian-American Chamber of Commerce and will hand out Belgian honorary distinctions to people who have distinguished themselves in sectors such as economics, science and the arts.

War in Ukraine and more

Lahbib will chair an event with European Commissioner Janez Lenarčič  and the Democratic Republic of Congo on combatting sexual violence.

The war in Ukraine will be addressed by the General Assembly, however, other things will also be stressed including the climate crisis, human rights issues, the fight against terrorism and extremism, rule of law, democratic principles and achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
