The energy crisis is hitting households everywhere with energy-saving measures being taken at the personal and public level. For its part, the Royal Palace has switched off the lighting of its facade since Monday.
Inside the building, the lights in the corridors are no longer on and palace staff have been asked to turn off unnecessary lights.
Renovations are under way to better insulate the palace. By the end of 2023, all shutters will be replaced and the windows will be fitted with double glazing (the majority of the palace is still single-glazed).
Furthermore, all lamps in the royal buildings have been replaced with LED bulbs which are around 90% more efficient than incandescent lightbulbs.

Long-term discussions are underway to install solar panels and other renovations of the more energy-consuming buildings will take place in the years to come.
Energy-saving measures
In August, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced that heating in public buildings will be limited to 19°C; lights in offices and monuments will be turned off at 19:00. Talks are ongoing to decide on switching off lights in motorways and cities between specific hours, reported Reuters.
