After two months of works – with the help of mountaineers – the Walloon train station in Liège-Guillemins has been transformed into a light and colour installation by French conceptual artist Daniel Buren. On Friday, the work will officially be inaugurated.
Buren (84) had transparent stripes in blue, yellow, red and green applied to the arched ceiling on the station in a staggered pattern – creating colour projections on the platforms that change depending on the time of day.
The artist prefers to work outside of museums and has built up an impressive body of work by applying stripes of colour in unexpected places, often temporarily.
The project in Liège-Guillemins is an initiative of the Uhoda group, which works with the Belgian railway company SNCB and wants to bring art to the general public. For this project, which cost €600,000, he received support from public and private partners.
During the presentation of the project this summer, Buren said the Liège station reminds him of the days when train stations were still allowed to be real "railway cathedrals," adding that he compares it to the Eiffel Tower.
