Asylum granted in 50% of cases in 2014

According to figures published on Tuesday by CGRA (Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons), in 2014, 8,139 people, that is, half of asylum seekers, were granted asylum. Taking into account the number and level of conflicts in zones surrounding Europe, this is the minimum figure to be expected annually in coming years, explains CGRA. In 2014, the Office decided in 46.8% of cases that asylum seekers needed protection, a leap from last year (29.4%). Since September 2014, the percentage was above 50%.

For the first time since World War 2, UNHCR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) recorded over 50 million refugees, displaced persons and asylum seekers around the world.

Asylum seekers arriving in Belgium hailed mostly from Syria (1,312), Afghanistan (1,256), Iraq (838), and Guinea (418).
