In the wake of Liz Truss' resignation on Thursday after just six weeks in office, Belgium's Prime Minister cautioned that a return of Truss' predecessor Boris Johnson to 10 Downing Street would not be wise.

When De Croo arrived at the second day of the EU summit on Friday, a journalist asked him what he thought about the rumours surrounding the candidacy of Boris Johnson to return as leader of the Conservative Party and UK Prime Minister.

"I do not have to express an opinion on this, because the UK is a democracy and democracy has to work," he answered before adding "but in general, in troubled times, it is always better to have a prime minister who has a future ahead of him or her."

De Croo also explained that it was imperative for a new Prime Minister to take office at 10 Downing Street. "The UK is a neighbour, a partner in many areas, and will remain. We hope to have someone soon with whom we can discuss all these issues."

No candidate has yet to officially declare for the internal Conservative Party ballot to appoint the new British Prime Minister, with the process being changed. Now, instead of amassing the backing of 50 Tory MPs, that threshold has now been increased to 100.
