47-year-old Farid Bamouhammad, also nicknamed Farid “le Fou” (Crazy Farid), remains a free man. According to the Flemish press on Monday, Liege Tribunal rejected the third party proceedings lodged by Koen Geens (CD&V), the justice minister, last December, opposing the liberation of Mr. Bamouhammad on medical grounds. “Mr. Bamouhammad was treated inhumanly during his many years in prison. He was kept in solitary confinement for long periods of time, which has left deep psychological scars. This man has been literally broken, the effects of which cannot be overcome inside prison walls,” comments his attorney, Thierry Moreau, speaking to the press group Sudpresse.
Farid Bamouhammad says he is happy, satisfied and relieved. “I am trying to live peacefully in Brussels, to build a new life, as discreetly as possible. I am obviously trying to heal. (…) I simply never want to have to go back to prison.”
