Environmental activists from the Just Stop Oil group on Monday defaced the wax figure of King Charles III at London's famous Madame Tussauds museum. This is the latest in a series of actions since the beginning of the month that demands an end to oil and gas exploration.

Two members of the group, who had bought their tickets, smashed a chocolate cake into the face of the wax statue of the king, Just Stop Oil claimed in a statement.

During the action, one of the campaigners echoed the words of a speech given in late 2019 by Charles, then Prince of Wales, stressing that the young people of his grandchildren's generation "demand immediate action, not just words". Now king, Charles has a long history of lending his voice to environmental and conservationist causes.

In a tweet, Just Stop Oil said that their actions, a few weeks ahead of COP27, are because King Charles III has reportedly abandoned plans to attend the climate conference at which he was going to deliver a speech. The decision not to attend was on the advice of former Prime Minister Liz Truss.

"The science is clear. The demand is clear: stop new oil and gas projects. It's a piece of cake," campaigners Eilidh McFadden, 20, and Tom Johnson, 29, said in a statement.

When contacted by AFP, the museum did not comment.
