The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) has indicated with its latest figures that energy consumption has decreased in Belgium by 28% compared to prior years.
As Belgium braces itself for a harsh winter as a result of the ensuing energy crisis, many homes and businesses have been seeking methods to minimise their energy use.
Figures collected by the ENTSOG, and reported by L'Echo, have shown that this autumn energy usage in Belgium has dropped by almost 28%, compared to the recorded consumption from 2018 to 2021.
Furthermore, in the third and fourth weeks observed, the figure was 40% lower due to the unusually high temperatures in October.
Energy-saving measures
According to L'Echo's view, the figures are proof that Belgians' energy-saving efforts are so far proving to be very successful, as their energy consumption was over 25% lower than what had been expected for this time of year.
Heating being used more frequently when the average daily temperature goes below 16.5°C is seen as a key way to measure energy consumption levels. Because of the abnormally chilly weather in September, energy usage increased, although it decreased in October.
The figures can be seen as contradicting economists who previously expressed concerns that additional state aid for the energy crisis would have deterred Belgian households to enact energy-saving measures of their own volition.
