Lotfi Amouer, a jihadist seen on a propaganda video by the terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) in which threats were made against Belgium, was part of the Belgian Army for two years, said the Department for Defence on Wednesday, confirming information relayed by the media. The 24-year-old Verviers inhabitant held a voluntary position in the army Medical Corps between 2010 and 2012 before he chose to leave.
According to a Sudpresse group interview with his family, Lotfi Amouer allegedly left Belgium for Algeria a year ago before going on to Syria.
The video shows three suspected ISIS fighters calling on Muslims in Europe who were not able to make their way to Syria and Iraq to continue jihadist attacks", including in Belgium. The 2-and-a-half-minute video is believed to have come from ISIS' media section, based in the Syrian province of Raqqa.
