The Dutch clothing chain C&A is closing several of its city centre shops in Belgium, due to them experiencing difficulties in the Belgian market.
De Tijd reported on Saturday that C&A will close a yet unknown number of outlets having already laid off 80 staff members this year. At their European headquarters in Zaventem, for example, 32 of their 400 employees were let go and a further 10 resigned.
Another 40 staff will have lost or will lose their jobs as a result of impending closures, which the company has stated is part of a 'modernisation strategy.'

For Eva Van Elst, a spokesperson for C&A, the reason they have yet to divulge the number of stores that will be closed is because they do not "want to create tension" since this would also result in the loss of a number of jobs.
Christian union CSC has praised the company's handling of the closure, as C&A are said to have offered staff the opportunity to work in another shop nearby.
