Three of the Brussels tunnels have been closed since 17:00 – during rush hour – on Monday following an accident in the inner ring road at the start of the E40 Brussels-Liège motorway near Woluwe Saint-Lambert.

Six vehicles are involved in the accident and three of the four traffic lanes in the direction of the city of Leuven (East of Brussels) are closed, according to the federal police.

“Due to the accident, the Belliard, Reyers-Montgomery and Reyers-Meisertunnel towards the E40 motorway are closed to traffic,” announced the Brussels Mobility Traffic info service on Twitter.

Many queues have formed, and people wanting to make their way to the E40 motorway are losing over 30 minutes.

Close-by roads are affected as well, with traffic jams also forming on the Boulevard Reyers, Avenue de Roodebeek, Boulevard Brand Whitlock, Tunnel de Cortenbergh and Chaussée de Louvain.

The authorities are strongly advising drivers to avoid the area.
