On Monday afternoon, the Brussels police shot a drunk man who came towards them with a knife in the city centre. The man's life is in danger, announced the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office.

The police services were called around noon for difficulties with a drunk person in the Rue Locquenghien, near Sainte Catherine.

"When the patrol arrived at the scene, the person in question was just kicked out and made his way to the police with a knife in hand," Willemien Baert of the public prosecutor's office said in a press release. "A police officer responded by using his service weapon. The victim was hit and taken to the hospital. His life is in danger."

A perimeter was established, the public prosecutor was informed and a ballistics expert, as well as a medical examiner, was appointed.

"Several witnesses are being heard to determine the exact circumstances of the incident," she said. "In the interest of the ongoing investigation, we will not communicate further at this time."
