Of the 4.9 million Belgians who own real estate, 854,914 own more than one house or flat, according to figures from FPS Finance reported by L’Echo and De Tijd on Saturday.
In other words, more than one in six residential property owners own at least one house or flat in addition to their home, either as an investment or to enjoy as a second home, a figure which is rising.
Of these multiple owners, 575,000 own a house or flat in addition to their main home, with the remaining 280,000 owning three or more. Just under 8% own more than five properties.
Among the latter, there are 43 Belgians with more than fifty properties in their name. These include holiday homes, rented flats and small studios.
Just under 176,000 Belgians own a residence abroad. Of these, some 20,000 have more than one residence abroad. France is by far the most popular country, followed by Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.
