On Thursday, the Walloon Government announced a decree to prohibit the import of puppies from other countries into the region. Coming into effect on 1 January 2026, this is part of the government's aim to improve animal welfare in the region.
Every year, around 7,000 puppies are imported into Wallonia, mainly from Eastern European countries, RTBF reports. From 2026, to give or sell a puppy the breeder will have to prove that the dog was born in Wallonia.
This will, in the government's eyes, help strengthen breeding conditions.
