On Monday, French-speaking public broadcaster RTBF revealed that an average of 896,000 viewers had tuned into their coverage of Sunday's World Cup final, with figures reaching a maximum of 1.27 million during the penalty shoot-out.
As Gonzalo Montiel struck home the winning penalty for Argentina in the shoot-out against France in Sunday's World Cup final, a total of 1.27 million French-speaking viewers were glued to their screens, as RTBF broadcast the topsy turvy match for all to see.
Overall, the contest drew an average of 896,000 viewers for the public service broadcaster, 61.5% of the market share and an increase on the 2018 final which drew 891,727 viewers for the RTBF.
Furthermore, the broadcaster was also pleased with the viewing figures for its digital platform Auvio, with an additional 1,015,842 viewers choosing to follow the action on there. This resulted in Auvio surpassing its own viewing record for the fifth time this year during the competition.

However, these figures also indicated that viewers did not heed calls to boycott the tournament due to the host country Qatar's poor worker and human rights records, especially with regards to the LGBTQ+ community.
