A record amount of fireworks were purchased in the Netherlands this year for New Year’s Eve.
According to the Dutch Pyrotechnics Association (BPN), firework vendors reported a turnover of 110 million euros.
The previous sales record dates back to the New Year’s Eve of 2019-2020, when €77 million worth of fireworks were sold in the Netherlands.
The following two years were marked by a ban on fireworks due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to BPN, 10% of the increase in sales is due to inflation and the higher price of fireworks. “The rest is really due to the fact that there has been a huge increase in demand. Enthusiasm for fireworks is very high this year,” BPN notes.
The fireworks sector had previously expected sales of around €85 million for this year, following a significant increase in pre-sale orders.
Orders were reportedly 1.5 to 2 times higher than in the same period in 2019. Orders could already be placed since mid-November and fireworks could be purchased directly in the shops for three days.
