Some 4,000 people went to an illegal rave in Sombreffe (Namur province) on New Year's Eve, according to Etienne Bertrand, the mayor of the municipality of Namur, following reports from local media.
Thousands of revellers, from Belgium and abroad, gathered at an unused warehouse in the business park of the Economic Department in the province of Namur.
When police tried intervening Saturday evening, a minor confrontation with ravers ensued. Reinforcements from other police zones were called in including help from the Fire Brigade in Val de Sambre.
The rave ended Sunday morning with partygoers peacefully going home. Nonetheless, authorities have set up an investigation to find the organisers of the illegal party.
