The council of scholars of the EMB (Muslim Executive of Belgium) will allow Muslims to choose ritual slaughter or not for the late September Eid-al-Adha, reveal newspapers from the Mediahuis group on Wednesday. The decision was made public when Ben Weyts (N-VA), the Minister for Animal Welfare, had forbidden the slaughter of sheep without stunning in temporary slaughterhouses.
Following a meeting on Tuesday evening, the council of scholars decided ritual slaughter of sheep was not mandatory for Eid-al-Adha this year. They hope to resolve the issue by next year however.
Several Muslim organisations made a summary application against the prohibition of slaughtering sheep without stunning by Ben Weyts.
