Police have launched an investigation after cocaine and cannabis were found in a home in Ledegem, West Flanders, where a dog bit and severely injured a toddler on Wednesday morning, the prosecutor's office in Kortrijk reported.
The one-and-a-half-year-old infant, whose parents are divorced, had been staying in his father’s home in the Ledegem borough of Sint-Eloois-Winkel. The child’s mother visited in the morning along with her dog, a Stafford. The exact circumstances are unknown but, at some point, the dog attacked the child, who was diagnosed at the hospital with serious injuries.
It was even feared that an arm and leg of the toddler would have to be amputated, but doctors made every effort to save the injured limbs. “It is hoped that those limbs are now effectively saved,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The victim’s father sustained serious injuries to his thumb in the incident.
Police later found two kilogrammes of cannabis and a smaller amount of cocaine in the father’s home. They also discovered a significant sum of money and the remnants of a cannabis plantation there. Further investigations have been launched.
Worried about the child's living conditions, the Kortrijk prosecutor’s office has asked the juvenile court to take urgent measures.
