Bad news for users of the instant translation service DeepL: prices for its professional service are increasing, and free access will also be limited, Le Soir reports.
One of the main competitors to Google Translate has been a growing success in recent years, with increasingly accurate translations that are widely used by professional translators. The service uses AI technology to generate its translations with a large and ever-growing number of languages – with the latest addition being Ukrainian.
Launched in 2017 in Cologne, Germany by the creators of Linguee, DeepL uses neural machine translation (NMT) – an approach to machine translation that predicts the likelihood of a sequence of words, typically modelling entire sentences in a single integrated model.
The product has become the go-to tool for translators and linguists alike. In view of the surge in usage, its creators have decided to reduce free access to the software.
Until now, it was possible to translate texts of 5000 characters without paying a single euro. The new limit is set at 3000 characters, which is much less.

For the creators of the software, this is a new lever to encourage users to subscribe to the paid version, with no limit on usage, which is now raised from €5.99/month to €7.49/month.
The new limit changes a lot of things and makes the service almost unusable for a student, for example.
Recognised for the excellence of its translations, Deepl has established itself over the last few years as THE instant translation software to use.
